New Year's Eve

Dear all!

It's almost noon so I decided to sit and write while I had some time. I am planning on staying home tonight...my last few New Year Eve's have been at home. Just don't want to get out in that drunken crowd...yeah, maybe I am maturing?? So, I'll have another quiet night. The neighborhood is planning an outdoor get-together at 11:15 pm. In the past year, we have had Germantown's version of the New York City ball-drop at midnight. This year, due to our German neighborhood heritage, they are planning a lighted bratwurst into a bowl of sauerkraut. I can't picture that, so I guess I'll have to go and watch...

I hope all of us always take a moment tonight to remember all those that perished or are injured in Southeast Asia from the earthquakes and tsunamis. It is such a catastrophic situation that I cannot even comprehend the totality of it. It just leaves me at a loss when I think about it. And it is bound to get worse from disease.

Yesterday, two cousins stopped by. JD Schramm from New York and his (our) cousin Jody Howard from Denver are related on the Schramm side, my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Schramm Kotzman, was their grandfather Hugo Schramm's step-sister. Yeah, not really related by blood but they are family and we act like it! Jody's son lives in Nashville, and since he was working and couldn't get to Denver for Christmas, they decided to make the trip here. Good to know I have another cousin in Nashville. Didn't know about him until a few weeks ago. We talked genealogy and then went to lunch at Blackstone's. I never met Jody before, and just met JD and his dad Jack at the family reunion we had in June in Frontenac KS.

I have some small jobs that need to be done today. Don't have to go back to work until Tuesday, thank you Gov. Bredesen! I'll try to get to mom and dad's either Sunday or Monday. I haven't felt too good the past few days...don't know if it's a bug or stress or acid reflux or just my body telling me to lose weight and slow down. But I hope it passes quick because I feel like, well, you know...

So, I'll get my butt in gear and start being productive today. Select great resolutions! I usually do the weight thing as a resolution. This year, it's not. It's not a hope-to thing, it's a has-to thing. I've joined a program at work called "Peel the Pounds". It's a six-month program which is not really a diet, but an education method to change lifestyle and eating habits. So In June, we'll see where I am. I would like to lose 50 lbs this year.

OK, have a wonderful New Year! I pray 2005 will be the best for all of you!

Yes, I know it's late---

Had a rest and relaxation evening. Wound up at the Beer sellar at 10 pm.

Had a great night with Ronnie, Danny and the guys.

But found out Reggie White had passed away. A great defensive guy for UT and in the NFL. Worse part--they said it was a massive heart attack at 43. I'm 43. It really hits home. But then again he was an athletic guy, and still subject to the coronaries. Maybe that shouldn't make a difference...

I do need to lose poundage. I talked with Doug tonight and he said we both need to lose a bunch of weight. I guess he'll be my guide... Am I worried?? No, he's a good guy! Thanks man--you're a good friend!

Catch you all later--we have Monday off!!!

The day after---Sunday Dec 26

I hope everyone had a great Christmas yesterday! I had a great time at Mom and Dad's.

We had planned Christmas for here by me, but Mother Nature changed the plans when she dumped snow and ice all over the Mid-South. Instead of my aunt and uncles and mom and dad trying to navigate the icy roads, we decided to postpone the family celebration until things warm up. So I went by the folks and we had a small celebration.

Midnight Mass was nice. A smaller crowd than usual, due to weather I guess. After Mass, a get-together in the school proved to be refreshing and great. Pat and Larry, my dear friend Evelyn's daughter and her husband, work hard to get everything just right! Evelyn was the parish coordinator at Assumption for many years. She lived at the rectory and did most of the work in church and around the parish complex. She passed away in 1997, but her daughter keeps Evelyn's tradition of refreshments after Midnight Mass going year after year.

I made lasagna, rice pudding and spinach dip and took it to the folks for dinner yesterday. Mom made the Greek salad, broccoli and pineapple upside-down cake. There was plenty for the three of us to eat. Got a lot of goodies too in presents and what Santa left in my sock!

Now today, I've caught up on my sleep from staying up at the party and helping with the clean-up until 3:30 am on Christmas Eve. I'm feeling ready to face the day ahead. And again, a Christmas carol is playing in my mind..."Good King Wenceslaus went out, on the feast of Stephen..." Today, December 26 is the feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr of the Church. Also today, the official designation is Feast of the Holy Family, celebrating the closeness of that Jewish family which welcomed a small child on that lonely night in a cave/manger at Bethlehem.
Titans lost again last night! And the Bears have a better record this year than they do! HA!

Well, I am going to jump in the shower and get ready for 11 am Mass. At 10:30 Central time, I found I can listen to KSL radio on the website from Salt Lake City and hear the weekly "Music and the Spoken Word" radio program that I went to in Salt Lake City. I listened last week and I could picture everything in my mind's eye. So, 10:30 is radio time!

Have a great day everyone!

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus! Dominus Deus Sabaoth, pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua! Hosanna in excelsis! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini, Hosanna in excelsis!

More for Sunday the 19th

Getting this out a little later than expected. It's been a full day.

Parish Council meeting was short! We were out by 1:15. Snow was flying when Mass was over, but it didn't last long. Those two brief snows were all we got yesterday. But the temperature nose dived! The morning started at 31 and it is now 19. We need some cold to kill all the bad bugs...and I hope this does it!

My trip to Salt Lake City was fantastic. I needed to do some research, as my Bell's and Jobson's were branching out to different places in Northumberland UK. The main Family History Library on Temple Square in Salt Lake City , from now on I will use SLC, has approximately 2 million reels of microfilm and humdreds of thousands sheets of microfiche, along with volumes of books. Since I needed to pull different parish records in Northumberland, the library was the best cost-wise. I can order the films through the Family History Center here in Madison, but at $6 each, it would add up to the price of the research trip out to SLC in no time!

I was hoping for snow when I got there--nope. The temperature was actually warmer there than here in Nashville! It was great to walk around town. SLC is a beautiful city. I toured the Beehive House, the home of Brigham Young. It was amazingly huge, guess it had to be for such a large family. The early wood pieces were all pine, but hand-painted to look like oak or walnut.

Temple Square was decorated with thousands of lights and a life-sized Nativity scene. Very beautiful and thousands of people came out every noght to walk through and get into the Christmas spirit.

I did some shopping at the malls there. Also walked to the Cathedral of the Madeleine. It was built in 1909 and is a gothic masterpiece. Beautiful paintings cover the church walls and ceilings. It is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene. I went to 6:00 pm Saturday Mass. I got there early, and vespers, Night Prayer, were going on. Never heard them done in a church before. The Mass soon started and it was High Mass. That's a term not used anymore! But it was a sung Mass. The prayers and responses during the Mass nowadays are spoken. At SLC, they were sung. After Mass, I knew I had been to Mass...that feeling of doing the right thing was there; something that doesn't always happen. Here at Assumption, and it may just be me, but there is so much fidgeting, so much noise, so many distractions, that the prayerful atmosphere is disturbed...greatly. There is so much lack of respect in church towards fellow parishioners and toward God. People have forgotten, or have just ignored, the fact that Jesus is present in the Blessed Sacrament in each and every church! It is a place of reflection and reverence and sanctity, not some building to talk and laugh and complain in.

OK, need to get off my soapbox for awhile!

So, what did I find at the SLC library?? I found that my great great great grandfather Thomas Bell, the one who died in 1840 as mentioned in previous blogs, was born and baptized in Alnwick in 1802. His father was Thomas Bell of Lesbury and his mother Mary Liddell also of Lesbury. I looked in Lesbury and found Thomas Bell baptized in 1767, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Bell, and Robert was a blacksmith. The parish records contained no earlier info on Robert or Elizabeth. Some brothers and sisters were found in the records, so I have a huge Bell family in England....somewhere!

On the Jobson side, I found that great great great grandfather Thomas Jobson was from the parish of Kyloe in upper Northumberland. His father was Humphrey Jobson and his mother was Mary Scott. They were married in 1763. No further info found on them. But I have constantly ran into records on a particular Jobson. The name has always been present in the materials I have read looking for my Jobson's. The name was Christopher Jobson. It extends through many generations, but I never had any indication he was a part of my Jobson's. Alas, I found a connection! Christopher was a younger brother to Thomas.

So on both the Bell and Jobson family's, I have gone as far back as 4th great grandparents. The records seem to wane before that. Maybe I have hit the limit on these families? I think I'll stop at that point for awhile and work on branching out the children of the families and work on some of the other families in my tree. Stay tuned for more on that process.

I flew through Kansas City going and coming back from SLC. Didn't like that airport at all! In order to check the arrivals/departures, go to the bathroom or visit restaurants and shops, you had to leave the secured area. Going back to your gate, you had to go back through security--the whole thing...remove shoes, x-ray bags, etc. It was a mess!

Tuesday, Doug drove in for a Liaison meeting for a few days. He works in our Atlanta office. We've been friends for over 10 years. I always like listening to Doug and his philosophical bent on world events. We went to dinner Tuesday and Wednesday and had a great time. We did a little beverage sampling on Wednesday night on 2nd Avenue. Hated to see him leave on Thursday...

Now I need to finish up the gift-buying and present wrapping. That shouldn't take long! Hopefully I'll be done with that by tomorrow or Tuesday. We'll decorate the church sometime this week. Mike Emrick and I usually do the garlands, lights and altars. He was absent from Mass and the parish council meeting, so I need to call him. We have all red poinsettias this year, and if you've ever been to Assumption, the church and altars are mainly white. So the contrast will be great!

Well, that's about it for me for today. Only four more workdays left before Christmas and seven more left for the year! Time is just moving too quickly. I guess it does get any slower either.

Oh, listened to Larry's new CD today. It' good, but it is a live recording so the volume changes from part to part. It's listenable, but not the greatest. I like to listen to him live at Mulligan's the best!

Have a great night and I'll be seein' ya soon!

Sunday morning...12/19

Just a quick note before going to Mass.

Hope all are well and looking forward to a wonderful Christmas Day on Saturday. I have almost all my tasks done. Still need a few more things from the stores, and some wrapping done.

It's been a wonderful few days since I last wrote. I took a short trip to Salt Lake City Dec 9-12. Got in some relaxation, rejuvenation and research. I'll say more about the trip in tonight's blog.

My friend Doug was in town Dec 14-16. We had a great visit. Too bad work got in the way of a fun time! It's always good to see Doug and raise a few glasses with him.

Last night I went to a CD release party at Mulligan's for Larry Kernagis. He's a Chicago guy and amazingly, a Irish music-singing Lithuanian! Haven't had a chance to listen to the CD yet, but the song selection looks great!

Well, time to finish getting ready. We have a parish council meeting after Mass today--always on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Hope it is a short one!

Catch you all later. Waiting for snow here in Nashville. Mom called a few minutes ago and said they have snow in Springfield now--cars are covered, but here the sun is shining. Springfield is about 30 miles northeast; so maybe it'll start while we are in church.

Have a wonderful day!

Been busy--gimme a break! 12/6

Yes, I know! I'm sorry! Gimme a break!!

Today, December 6 the feast of one of the all-time favorite saints! Did everyone get goodies in your shoes??? No?! Then you mustn't have put them outside the door!

The feast of St. Nicholas! The old timey custom of giving gifts was usually done today instead of Christmas. Now, poor St. Nick's feast is forgotten and he is transferred to a fat jolly Santa Claus on Christmas. What a distortion of tradition! You all know I am a Catholic purist and a love of hagiography (look it up!).

Getting all my Christmas stuff done. Still doing cards, but got the house all decorated and lights flashing!! Dinner is by me this year, so have to start planning a menu for that.

Work is being a bear again. I come in with a list to accomplish, but phone calls and e-mails always push the start of that list until mid-afternoon. Hate to say it, but sometimes, I really miss my old job!!

Thanks to all of you for reading my comments! I know I have been "in communicado" for a while. And I always keep promising to do better, but every time I do that I fall further behind. So much for planning--you know the good intentions mantra!

So, I am off to bed. Keeping all of you in my prayers. Made some new friends recently. But the main thing is to keep the old ones! "Make new friends, but keep the old! One is silver and the other gold!" Somehow that song is playing in my brain right now.

Sleep tight and if you are in Nashville...KEEP DRY! So much rain!!!

Laters!
